How Do We Begin A Dialogue on Racism?

on Mon, 2018-12-10 17:51

Start by watching Bryan Stevenson deliver a Commencement address at NYU Law School, then watch the 13th documentary, and lastly, see two movies, BlacKkKlansman and The Green Book. And if someone tells you either of these movie are cliched or predictably sentimental, don't be surprised. You may hear 'what does this have to do with me in 2018?'  Know we cannot make progress anywhere – in education inequality or women's rights unless racism is discussed, too. Why? Because those two issues are met with identical reactions when someone tries to describe obstacles or problems.

How Much Have We Forgotten?

Gail Collins reminds us how our memories begin to fade, and what is now astonishing was both commonplace and embraced just 30 or 50 years ago. What is more shocking? That women today recognize we need change, but few know how to actually effect change given the obstacles and a culture so hostile to letting women 'in.' That inner sanctum is too male yet no one has a solution that includes more than women by themselves (think Lean In) or laws (think 1970's affirmative action quotas).
