How to pass the baton without tripping or falling down

on Mon, 2018-06-18 18:25

As we grow older, and it seems time to rewire (please note I did not use the word retire!), the image of a baton comes to mind. Yet anyone who's ever run a relay race and had to pass the baton, knows this is far from an easy feat. In fact, a number of challenges are present:

1. What? I have to pass this baton? The one I've grown so very fond of, firmly attached to, and in fact, in so many ways, it is my identity.

2. Passing a baton in a relay race requires slowing down just enough to allow the next racer to get a firm grip, but also maintaining enough speed so the team stays in the race.  Figuring out that exact right speed is harder than doing five place multiplication in your head.

3. There are a number of ways to successfully pass the baton, not just one way (naturally usually my way!). Recognize that in each race, each individual pass of the baton is unique. Listening to those coaching you and also encouraging team members to express their preferences can help.

4. Because this is a team sport, naturally you want your team to win, but if you're convninced you and your speed hold the sole key to victory, your team will surely lose.

in 2018 I have the opportunity pass the baton in several areas. I am hoping to hear feedback from friends, family, and fellow journeyors, and most importantly, be able to really hear their words of advice and wise counsel. Wish me luck.
