Making a Difference - Racial Justice

on Sun, 2020-09-27 17:03

Citi was just in the news for naming a woman CEO, the first woman CEO of any major bank. Citi's commitment to spend $1Billion to achieve racial justice is even more impressive. What if more company CEO's would read this report and take meaningful action alongside Citi to make a real difference?

Who Is responsible for teaching 'white' people about racism?

on Wed, 2020-06-10 12:58

Who is responsible for teaching 'white' people about racism? Actually, we are, and people of color have lived inside this nightmare for far too long. I invite you to take a look at this list of resources. I would add the PBS series done by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. whose book, Stony The Road, traces the tragic history of Reconstruction, including The Great Betrayal, and subsequent creation by the media of a white supremacy narrative still permanently woven into every aspect of our society today. The consequences threaten every aspect of our communities and hope for the future.

Health Care Inequity – Ground Zero in Brooklyn

on Sun, 2020-04-26 12:15

Unless there is accountability, this inequity will continue to cost lives and cause trauma for the health care profesisonals who work there. Warren Buffett helps a 'rich' Manhattan hospital while no one seems to care about the dilapadated condition of this Brooklyn hospital. Politicians say too little, and federal grants are insufficient. What can one citizen do? Elect representatives who see this problem and will take action.

Selma 55th Jubilee Bridge March 2020

on Fri, 2020-03-06 13:17

After being in the warmth of Selma for the 55th Jubilee of the Bridge Crossing, we recognize how blessed and inspired we are by the courage of the foot soldiers and martyrs. A marcher from 1965, Rep. John Lewis says it well, “We need to redeem the soul of America.”

Thanksgiving Day Reflection on Rosa Parks

on Tue, 2019-11-26 19:26

How can we express our gratitiude for all the women who came before us, who showed us the way? Here is one way – be open to learning history you were never taught – as we did during our visit here two weeks ago.

Rosa Parks is known for not giving up her seat in Montgomery in 1955. Our Principle Quest group learned that her legacy at the Rosa Parks Museum reaches far beyond the bus, thanks to Felicia A. Bell, Ph. D. shown here in the center.

Professor Gates teaches all of us (again!)

"Southern 'Redeemers' snuffed out the first Black Power movement"

From 2000 duly elected African American officials to zero in just 12 years - how gains of Reconstruction were obliterated, and only 70 years later did the damage too slowly begin to reverse.

Gates' book, Stony The Road, is an even more shocking and thorough walk through this period of history we were never taught.

Refuting 'The Downside of Diversity' My Letter to the Wall Street Journal

on Sat, 2019-08-10 00:06

The Wall Street Journal published a shortened version of my letter to the editor August 9-10, 2019 refuting Kronman's 'The Downside of Diversity' here. In case you cannot access it, here is the unedited version:

Mr. Kronman’s “The Downside of Diversity” August 3-4, 2019 is cleverly constructed to convince, but also ignores America’s own history. Diversity is not the equivalent of identity politics, much as that would help him convince us.

How Do We Begin A Dialogue on Racism?

on Mon, 2018-12-10 17:51

Start by watching Bryan Stevenson deliver a Commencement address at NYU Law School, then watch the 13th documentary, and lastly, see two movies, BlacKkKlansman and The Green Book. And if someone tells you either of these movie are cliched or predictably sentimental, don't be surprised. You may hear 'what does this have to do with me in 2018?'  Know we cannot make progress anywhere – in education inequality or women's rights unless racism is discussed, too. Why? Because those two issues are met with identical reactions when someone tries to describe obstacles or problems.
